Ava woke up early. Her room felt quiet and bright. She looked out her window. The whole world was white!
Snow covered every yard and roof. Then Mom's phone beeped. School was closed — a snow day! Ava and Max pressed their noses to the cold glass and cheered.
On went the boots. On went the coats. On went the hats and warm mittens. Ava and Max were ready for the snow.
They pushed open the door. Then they jumped into the deep, soft snow. Their warm breath puffed out like little clouds.
Leo lived right next door. He ran over to play. Together they built a giant snow fort. They packed the walls up tall and dug a little tunnel.
Then the fun began! They tossed soft snowballs high into the air. The three of them laughed and laughed.
Next they rolled three big snowballs. One, two, three — they stacked them up high. Now they had a round, white snowman!
They gave him a carrot nose and two stick arms. Ava wrapped her old scarf around his neck. “Let's call him Mr. Frost!” she said.
Their cheeks were cold and pink. They stomped inside, happy and warm. Mom made hot cocoa with fluffy marshmallows on top.
Their wet mittens steamed by the heater. Ava and Max warmed their hands on the cozy mugs. Snow days were the very best.
By the window, Ava watched the snow. It drifted down soft and slow. The yard was quiet and white again.
She smiled a warm, sleepy smile. The best days, she thought, are the ones you never see coming.
