Mia was at summer camp for the very first time. Tonight she would sleep in a wooden cabin, far away from home.
When the lights went out, the cabin felt big and dark. Mia felt homesick, and a little bit scared.
Summer Camp
Mia missed her mom and dad. She missed her own soft bed and her own quiet room.
The cabin was full of kids she had never met. Mia curled up small in her bunk and almost cried.
Then a girl in the next bunk leaned over. “Hi! I'm Priya. Want to be swim buddies tomorrow?”
Mia nodded and smiled a small smile. Maybe camp would not be so scary after all.
The days filled up with fun! Mia and Priya swam in the cool lake and paddled a wobbly canoe.
They hiked in the woods and made friendship bracelets. They became the best of camp friends.
On the last night, all the campers sat around a crackling campfire. They roasted marshmallows until they were warm and gooey.
They squished them into sweet, sticky s'mores. Then they sang silly songs under a sky full of stars.
When it was time to go home, Mia felt sad to leave. Camp had turned out to be the best week ever.
She gave Priya a big goodbye hug. Mia already could not wait to come back next summer.
