Bo was a small, round ghost, and Bo loved Halloween. He loved the glowing pumpkins, the costumes, and the children laughing in the street below his window.

But Bo had a secret. He lived in the old attic at the very top of the house, and the attic was very, very dark.

And Bo — a ghost! — was afraid of the dark.

On Halloween night, a tiny firefly flew in through a crack in the roof. Her little light was almost out.

“I'm lost,” she said. “It's so dark in here. I can't find my way.”

“I'm afraid of the dark too,” Bo whispered. The firefly looked up at him and smiled.

“Then let's be brave together,” she said. “Just one small step. I'll go with you.” So they did.

And in the dark, they found friendly things. A sleepy spider waved from her web. Moonlight lay soft on an old rocking chair. A trunk of forgotten toys gave off a gentle glow.

The dark was not empty at all, Bo saw. It was full of friends.

“Being brave,” said the firefly, “is not never being scared. It is taking one small step anyway.”

Bo took a deep breath. And slowly, from the very middle of him, he began to glow — soft and warm and bright.
