Why speaking Luxembourgish is the hurdle

Luxembourg nationality asks you to prove your Luxembourgish through the Sproochentest, a spoken test — and for most applicants, many from the country's large Portuguese- and French-speaking communities, the hard part is not vocabulary but speaking out loud on the spot in a language few use at work. Classes help but fill up and cost money, and nothing in a textbook rehearses the test's own format: answer a topic question, or describe a picture, to an examiner. LuxNationality is built for exactly that. It teaches the language in short lessons with help in English, Portuguese or French, then lets you practise the two real speaking tasks — you record your answer, play it back, and read a transcript of what you actually said next to a model answer at the exam level. It adds exam-style listening and a review queue so what you learn sticks. To turn your spoken answer into that transcript, the recording is sent to a Luxembourg language service that does not keep it; everything else stays on your phone. It is an independent study aid, not affiliated with the INL or the Luxembourg government — only the official Sproochentest decides your result.

LuxNationality is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the INL (Institut National des Langues) or the Luxembourg government. It is practice material for the Sproochentest — only the official test decides your result. Exam details can change, so always confirm the latest with the INL before your exam. Practising here produces no certificate, result or official status, this is not legal or immigration advice, and it is not a guarantee of a result.

Who it's for

Frequently asked questions

What is the Sproochentest, and how does LuxNationality help?
The Sproochentest is Luxembourg's official spoken-language test, which you take as part of applying for Luxembourg nationality. LuxNationality helps you get ready on your phone: it teaches Luxembourgish step by step, then lets you rehearse the two real speaking tasks — answering a topic question and describing a picture — alongside exam-style listening practice, working towards A2 in speaking and B1 in listening.
Is LuxNationality affiliated with the INL or the Luxembourg government?
No. LuxNationality is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the INL (Institut National des Langues), which runs the Sproochentest, or the Luxembourg government. Only the official Sproochentest decides your result, and the rules can change — always confirm the latest details with the INL before your exam. It does not give legal or immigration advice.
How does the speaking practice work — what happens to my voice?
When you practise a topic question, your phone records your answer so you can play it back, and to show you a transcript of what you said, the recording is sent to Sproochmaschinn — a Luxembourg language service — which turns speech into text and does not store it. When you describe a picture, your answer is checked on your phone and is not sent anywhere. A copy of each recording is kept only on your phone (the most recent ones), there is no account, and you can see this explained next to every record button in the app.
Which language does it teach, and what languages is it in?
It teaches Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch). All the lessons, help and explanations are written in English, Portuguese and French, so you can learn in whichever of those you are most comfortable with.
Is LuxNationality free, and what does Premium include?
LuxNationality is free to start — the first lessons and their audio, a selection of speaking and listening practice, the review feature and the full exam guide are free, in all three languages. A Premium subscription unlocks all the lessons, speaking topics, pictures and listening exercises.
