How to play Ramayan: Rise of Ram

  1. Ramayan: Rise of Ram is a third-person 3-D action-adventure drawn from Valmiki's Ramayana. You play as the young prince Ram, with a khadga (sword) and the Kodanda bow, and his brother Lakshman fights beside you. This Early Access release has two parts: the Prologue and Chapter 1.

  2. Start a New Game and the Prologue opens at dawn on the Sarayu, at Vasishtha's gurukul. The tutorial teaches each move in turn — the sword combo, the dodge roll, blocking against Lakshman's staff, and the bow — then rest at the ashram fire and spar with Lakshman.

  3. In Chapter 1, the Forest of Tataka, Vishwamitra comes to King Dasharatha's court and asks for Ram. Follow the sage with Lakshman across the Sarayu and the Ganga into the cursed forest: fight rakshasa warriors and archers and the beasts of the forest, face Tataka herself, then guard Vishwamitra's yajna at Siddhashrama from Maricha and Subahu.

  4. Fight with timing, not button-mashing: chain the five-strike sword combo, roll through an attack at the last moment for a perfect dodge, lock on to a foe, and switch to the bow to aim and draw a charged arrow. Watch for the telegraphs — a red glow means an attack you cannot block, so roll away.

  5. Ashrams along the way are your checkpoints: rest at one to save, and Continue from the last ashram you rested at. If Ram's strength runs out, he kneels to gather it and rises again at the last ashram.

  6. Story scenes are voiced in Hindi and English, with subtitles in either language (or off); pick voice and subtitle language separately in the pause menu (Esc). The same menu has three difficulty levels (Story, Balanced, Hard), graphics quality, subtitle size, music / voice / effects volume, hold-or-toggle for aiming and sprinting, invert-Y and key rebinding.

Tips

  • Roll into an attack, not away from it — rolling at the last moment is a perfect dodge, which slows time for a moment and opens the foe up.
  • A red glow on an attack means it cannot be blocked: roll. A gold glint means a perfect dodge is there to be had.
  • Lock on (Tab) when a fight gets crowded, so your strikes and rolls stay pointed at the foe that matters.
  • Archers hang back: close the gap or switch to the bow, and hold the draw until it flashes gold for a full-power arrow.
  • Rest at every ashram you find — it saves your progress and is where you continue from.
  • If a boss feels too hard, Story difficulty in the pause menu softens every fight without skipping any of the story.

About Ramayan: Rise of Ram

Ramayan: Rise of Ram is Navritto's third-person 3-D action-adventure, drawn from Valmiki's Ramayana. You play as the young prince Ram in the chapters of the Bala Kanda, with the khadga sword and the Kodanda bow, and his brother Lakshman fights at your side. This is an Early Access release containing the Prologue and Chapter 1; later chapters are in development. In the Prologue you train at Vasishtha's gurukul on the banks of the Sarayu — the sword, the dodge roll, the block and the bow — and spar with Lakshman. In Chapter 1, the Forest of Tataka, the sage Vishwamitra asks King Dasharatha for Ram, and you follow him with Lakshman into the cursed forest: rakshasa warriors and archers, the beasts of the forest, the yakshi Tataka in her cursed form, and finally Maricha and Subahu, who come to defile Vishwamitra's yajna at Siddhashrama. Combat is about timing — a five-strike sword combo, a heavy strike, a dodge roll with a slow-motion perfect dodge, blocking, lock-on, and a bow you aim and draw for a charged shot. Ashrams are checkpoints where you rest, save and continue. Story scenes are voiced in Hindi and English with subtitles in either language, and the chapter closes on a painted scroll in the Pattachitra style. The game treats its characters with dignity: Ram never dies or falls — when his strength runs out he kneels, gathers it, and rises again — and there is no blood or gore, as befits its Teen (13+) rating. It is an original game, not affiliated with any film or television adaptation of the Ramayana. It runs in a desktop browser with nothing to install, played with a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad, and the graphics quality adjusts to your computer. The voices are produced with an open text-to-speech model, the loading-screen and chapter-scroll paintings are AI-assisted art, and both — with the third-party software, art and sound it uses — are credited on its licences page.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ramayan: Rise of Ram?
It is a third-person 3-D action-adventure drawn from Valmiki's Ramayana, played in your browser. You play as the young prince Ram, with a sword and the Kodanda bow, and Lakshman fights beside you. The current release is Early Access and contains the Prologue and Chapter 1.
What is in the Prologue and Chapter 1?
The Prologue is a tutorial at Vasishtha's gurukul on the Sarayu, ending in a spar with Lakshman. Chapter 1, the Forest of Tataka, follows Vishwamitra into the cursed forest: rakshasa warriors and archers, the forest's beasts, the boss fight with Tataka, and the defence of Vishwamitra's yajna against Maricha and Subahu. Later chapters are in development.
Is the story based on the Valmiki Ramayana?
Yes. The chapters follow Valmiki's Ramayana (the Bala Kanda), with the scenes written for the game in Hindi and English. It is an original game and is not affiliated with any film or television adaptation.
Is the game in Hindi?
Yes. Story scenes are voiced in Hindi and in English, and subtitles are available in Hindi, in English, or off. You choose the voice and subtitle language separately in the pause menu.
Can I play it on a phone?
Not yet. Ramayan: Rise of Ram needs a desktop or laptop, played with a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. On a phone or tablet the page points you to games you can play by touch; a mobile version is planned.
What do I need to play it?
A desktop or laptop browser with WebGL 2 and hardware acceleration turned on — a recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari — played with a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. The game picks its graphics quality for your computer, so integrated graphics run at a lower setting automatically. With hardware acceleration off the game is too slow to play, and it tells you so.
Does it support a gamepad?
Yes. It plays with an Xbox-style gamepad as well as with a keyboard and mouse, and keyboard keys can be rebound in the pause menu.
Is Ramayan: Rise of Ram suitable for children?
It is rated Teen (13+): mythological fantasy combat with no blood or gore. Defeated rakshasas fade away, and Ram is never shown dying — when his strength runs out he kneels and rises again.
Is it free, and does it need a download?
It is free to play in your browser, with no account and nothing to install. It is a large 3-D game, so the first load downloads its art and sound, and it runs best on a computer with a reasonably recent graphics chip; the graphics quality adjusts to your computer and can be changed in the pause menu.
